Creating the Perfect Place Setting

When it comes to arranging a beautiful table, Joseph Marini of Joseph & Co's got us covered. Here are his 5 steps for creating the perfect place settings—and it’s even easier than you think!

  1. Use place mats and napkins that are neutral in color, and always start with a white plate. It’s great to have versatile items to start out with, because this allows you to use them from one season to the next, and you can easily switch out other items to follow the color scheme of your table.
  2. Make sure your plate, and flatware are touching the bottom edge of the placemat, and always center your plate in the mat. This one’s important and will keep your table looking uniformed in spacing!
  3. When using multiple drinking glasses, always place the taller glass on the inside. Glasses will typically go on the right side of the plate. Napkins look best folded in long rectangles, placed vertically in the center of your plate.
  4. A smaller plate or shallow bowl goes nicely on top of the napkin, and this is the perfect place to bring out family heirloom pieces that can be the driving force of your table’s color scheme.
  5. Seasonal items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, pine cones, or holiday decorations can be placed in the top plate or bowl to add a little something extra to your table! The place setting image above is Joseph's fall version, and his summer and holiday versions are below.
