A Day at Darby Farms

Some days at G&G, our job gets a little dreamy. The day we we frolicked around Darby Farms in Monroe, Georgia with the one and only Daniel Dover was one of those days.

After a quick drive, we found ourselves at Daniel’s doorstep. He welcomed us and immediately led us to what I can only describe as a pile of puppies. One of his Great Pyrenees dogs had just had a litter and there they were, prime for the snuggling.  What a way to start a tour!

(Side note: One of those puppies have since become Fernando, the K9 son of our very own Chef Jarrett Stieber, and is pretty much a local celebrity.)

The farm is obviously designed to work in unison with nature. We stomped through the woods with pigs, helped Daniel move the fence for the sheep, greeted the chickens and even held a turkey!

The best part of a tour of Darby Farms is Daniel. His passion and love for what he is doing is present in every word. And what exactly is he doing? He is working with nature to raise some of the best pastured meats available in Georgia.

Daniel was drawn to farming after realizing how his diet was affecting his health. He “resolved to feed himself, family, friends and neighbors with nutrient dense foods.” It all started with a little garden. I suppose in this scenario, the egg came before the chicken as he first expanded into laying hens then later into meat chickens.

Daniel’s hard work has a big payoff. His chicken breasts and chicken thighs are just as tasty as his farm is dreamy and can be found all over Atlanta, including the G&G menu and local market.

Want to frolic at the farm? Daniel offers farm tours for anyone interested in learning more.
