Back to farmers

Matt Fry has been delivering organic produce to G&G for well over 5 years now. We are thankful for his team at Fry Farm and the fantastic produce they grow for us every week! Fry Farm has been in operation for nearly two decades, and it's obvious that they are passionate about what they do–they have perfected the art and science of farming. Every squash, beet, carrot and more that we taste from Fry Farm is somehow even better than the last. We asked Matt a few questions about the farm, read on to learn more!

Tell us about Fry Farm! Where are you located and when did you get started?

The Fry Family started Fry Farm back in 2006 on their 12.5 acre property in Bethlehem, GA - northern Walton County. From just a few small summer growing beds the first year, we expanded to a year-round thriving operation.

We know that you use only the best chemical-free practices on your farm. Can you tell us about this and why it’s so important?

From the get-go, we decided to stay away from synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. We wanted to keep the biology of our soil healthy, protect our pollinators and beneficial insects, which can only be achieved by growing organically. Also, we always avoided consuming foods that may contain potentially harmful chemicals/pesticides so we would never grow/sell produce that had contact with it whatsoever.

What are your favorite things to grow on the farm? Are some of them easier or more reliable than others?

We really like growing a variety of “winter” squash. There are so many different cultivars and new ones being developed that it really makes it exciting for us growers and consumers. The same thing goes for peppers. Both of those crops are relatively (key word) low maintenance and reliable each year. We also really enjoy growing carrots now that we have gotten pretty good at it.

What is the hardest part of operating a farm?

The hardest part, by far, is keeping a positive attitude when conditions beyond our control are not ideal. So much of farming, such as the weather, is unpredictable and uncontrollable which can be extremely frustrating. Anyone that has grown a garden can probably sympathize.

Do you have any favorite recipes that you like to make with the produce you grow?

It really changes throughout the season, but it’s hard to beat a homemade tomato pie during tomato season. We just love them. Roasted root vegetables during the fall/winter is also one of our favorite dishes - and it’s easy!

Aside from through G&G, where can we find Fry Farm produce? Are you at any farmers markets around town?

We attend two farmers markets - Suwanee Farmers Market and Sandy Springs Farmers Market. We do offer farm pickup (orders are placed through our website, here.). Aside from that, we have several restaurant partners in and around Atlanta.
