EAV FARMER'S MARKET

As the idea for G&G was percolated in my head this past fall I decided to embark on a comprehensive tour of Atlanta’s local food world, particularly its farmers markets. I’d been to several before, but I’d heard about so many more, and wanted to experience each. You’d think they would all be the same, but in reality each has such a distinct personality. One of the markets still open into November was the notable East Atlanta Village Market. I was running a bit late and ended up walking into the EAV Market as everyone was packing up for the evening. Just as I was scolding myself for running behind and turned to leave, folks started gathering in the middle of the square. I realized I had stumbled upon the annual Thanksgiving Potluck (Ah-ha, so that’s why there is a turkey on the picnic table). Even though I was too late for the produce, I lingered at the entrance and observed the group. One of the community members started to speak and express thanks and gratitude for the farmers, market leaders and the neighbors who support and make EAV come alive each Thursday evening. As I was listening to his welcome address, my conception of local food evolved. It isn’t just that ‘eating local’ helps the environment, supports natural growing practices, and supports the local economy; it builds community. EAV and so many places like it are where farmers, neighbors, friends, and even strangers can celebrate and rejoice in food together.

I’m happy to say that I continue to have similar experiences as I branch out into the Atlanta food world: including getting to know some of the local foodies in town and events with Slow Food Atlanta (another potluck!), the Georgia Organics Conference and Atlanta Local Food Initiative. While I’m new to this community myself, I am eager to participate and contribute, build awareness and spread the word. As I have found, if you love honest food then there is a conversation to be had. And if you are open, you will be greeted with warmth. Anyone currently on the outside looking in, interested in finding out more about this community, know that the best part is that there is room for everyone.
