Going Home Dinner at Homegrown
Thursday, September 18, 2014
Remember your favorite meals from childhood? Want to crowd around a table and share a delicious meal with your fellow Atlantans? We've got great news! On September 28th, you have the chance to join G&G Chef Nick Melvin and Home grown's chef Kevin Clark for a night of amazing food, cold drinks and home cooking at their Going Home Dinner, inspired by the foods they grew up loving. We chatted with Nick to see what inspired this fun event.
G&G: Why did you decide to do a dinner centered around home cooked meals?
Chef Nick: We wanted to do a dinner based on the food that we really just enjoyed eating. So many times people over think the food that they are cooking and forget about the classics that we grew up with and that really make us feel good on the inside. Thats what this dinner is about, it’s about just relaxing and cooking food that makes you feel like your going home.
G&G: The dinner will be served family style. Why do you think its important for family & friends to share meals?
Chef Nick: Food is about community and sharing and as such should be shared by the people that you love and even strangers. There is nothing stronger than the power that food has to bring people together.
G&G: Where did you grow up and how has that influenced the way you cook?
Chef Nick: I grew up in Louisiana, North and South. For the longest time I was so focused on cooking other peoples food [in restaurants] and I didn’t think about the food that caused me to fall in love with this business. The second that I realized that my “style” was actually going back to my roots and having fun with it, was probably one of the biggest moments of clarity for me in my career.
G&G: What was your favorite comfort food growing up? What is it now?
Chef Nick: There are a lot of foods that derive comfort for me but one of the foods that I would probably say I look the most forward to it a big bowl of Chicken and Andouille Gumbo w/ White Rice. It’s like a big ole comfort blanket.
G&G: What are you most looking forward to for the “Going Home Dinner”?
Chef Nick: I’m looking forward to cooking food that to me is as honest and as pure as it gets. And of course I’m looking forward to doing it with the Comfort king himself, Kevin!
