Spice Up Your Winter: Our 4 Favorite Winter Spices

Fennel

Fennel seed, a member of the parsley family, has a sweet anise-like flavor. Just a little bit goes a long way, as you’ll see in this week’s Campfire Trout, where fennel seed is mixed with garlic, onion, paprika and cornmeal to make an unforgettable crust for North Georgia trout. Fennel seed has long been a symbol of longevity and strength in ancient medicine and rightfully so. The seed contains anti-oxidant compounds that can help protect against cancers, infection and aging.

Cloves

Just the smell of cloves alone is enough to toss you into a nostalgic winter whirlwind. The component that gives cloves’ their warm, sweet-and-peppery flavor also acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent. Cloves are delicious in everything from tea to rich, savory sauces.

Caraway

We’ve gotten carried away by caraway seeds. This traditional European spice adds a deep, savory flavor to dishes. Like fennel seed, caraway seed is also in the parsley family. Also like fennel seed, it’s deliciously complimented by paprika. You’ll love it in the creamy noodles along side our Chicken Paprikash (Hungarian for Paprika Chicken).

Turmeric

Turmeric is undoubtedly the spice of the year! It’s protective effects again inflammation and cancer have been touted all over the Internet. And lucky for us, it’s delicious too! We love adding it to stir fry dishes and soups. Not only does it add a great, mild flavor, but it adds a beautiful deep yellow color too!
